甲状腺功能减退症是由甲状腺分泌的甲状腺素不足所致。这种状况又称为甲状腺功能低下症。甲状腺功能减退症通常不会引起眼病。但在严重情况下，甲状腺功能减退症可能引起眼周肿胀，还会导致眉毛外周毛发脱落。

眼睛问题在甲状腺功能亢进症（甲状腺机能亢进症）患者中更为常见，在格雷夫斯病（甲状腺功能亢进症的最常见形式）患者中尤为多发。此类患者可能会出现一种称为甲状腺眼病（格雷夫斯眼病）的眼部疾病，可引起眼部酸痛、眼球突出及视力变化。
