Sean P. Cleary, M.D.

Sean P. Cleary, M.D., M.S., is a hepatobiliary and pancreas surgeon. He is interested in innovative minimally invasive approaches to treat pancreatic, hepatic, and biliary malignancies. He is the division chair of hepatobiliary and pancreas surgery and chair of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic disease group of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Cleary strives for patient-centered care that is respectful and attentive to patients' preferences and values.

His clinical focus includes:

• Open and minimally invasive surgery (robotic and laparoscopic) including the Whipple procedure to treat benign and malignant pancreas tumors, as well as liver resection for removal of liver cancers.
• Surgical treatment for metastatic cancer to the liver and other abdominal organs.
• Laparoscopic and open management of pancreatic neoplasms, pancreatic cysts, pancreatitis, hepatocellular cancer, cholangiocarcinoma and metastatic lesions of the liver.

Dr. Cleary earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Toronto, where he also completed the Clinical Investigator Program, earning his Master of Science and a Masters of Public Health. He continued his training at the University of Toronto, completing a fellowship in Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic surgical oncology and abdominal transplantation.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Cleary is active in research and education. He received the Frank Milles Teaching Award and Nicolas Colapinto Teaching Award, conferred by the University of Toronto, for his mentorship of residents and fellows. His research interests include the genetic epidemiology of pancreatic and hepatocellular cancer. He is widely published with over 150 peer-reviewed articles and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
