Inheritance patterns are the different ways genetic conditions and other traits are passed from generation to generation in a family.
- The genome consists of 23 pairs of chromosomes, but only 22 chromosome pairs are numbered.
- Most genetic conditions involve single genes on one of the 22 numbered and paired chromosomes that make up most of your genome. These chromosomes are called autosomes.
- Autosomes are the same in men and women, so autosomal conditions can occur in either sex.
