Experience and expertise
Mayo Clinic cardiologists and cardiac surgeons have specialized training and extensive experience and expertise evaluating and treating people who may need transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Mayo doctors perform about 200 transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs) each year. Doctors at Mayo Clinic have performed more than 1,000 TAVR procedures since 2008.
Mayo doctors in the Valvular Heart Disease Clinic have extensive experience and expertise evaluating and treating people with aortic valve stenosis and other heart valve diseases. Cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and others work together to evaluate people with aortic valve stenosis and determine whether TAVR or another treatment is most appropriate.
In addition to transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), Mayo doctors have experience performing a wide range of cardiac catheterization procedures to treat various heart conditions.
Research and innovation
Mayo Clinic researchers have been involved in numerous pivotal studies related to TAVR. In studies, doctors compared mortality rates of heart valve surgery and TAVR in people with aortic valve stenosis who had a high or intermediate risk of complications from open-heart surgery. Researchers found that TAVR and open-heart surgery had similar mortality rates.
Doctors and researchers at Mayo Clinic are also involved in developing and testing advanced technology and techniques used to care for people with heart valve disease.
