Research

Mayo Clinic researchers are studying several aspects of care related to sigmoid colectomy. Current research focuses on:

  • Improving surgical quality and patient outcomes, including evaluating factors linked to successful colorectal surgery, refining perioperative care protocols and advancing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs that help patients recover more quickly following colon resections.
  • Investigating laparoscopic and open approaches for diseases of the colon and rectum, while also leading efforts to enhance postoperative recovery and reduce complications.
  • Examining surgical outcomes for patients with diverticulitis and colorectal cancer using large-scale data analyses to identify best practices and improve the quality and safety of colorectal surgical care, and reduce the differences in outcomes across patient groups.
  • Combining these efforts to optimize the effectiveness of procedures such as sigmoid colectomy while improving recovery, reducing complications and enhancing long-term patient outcomes.
