Health and wellness benefits
Medical plan options
Mayo employees can select from several medical insurance plans, which vary in cost-sharing, to meet your family's health care and budget needs. The Mayo Medical Plan includes in-network, expanded in-network and out-of-network coverage across all 50 states.
In addition, plans provide 100 percent coverage for preventive care services, include prescription drug coverage and offer air ambulance transportation when hospitalized more than 150 miles away from home.
Dental plan options
Two dental insurance plan options are available. The traditional dental plan covers two preventive cleanings each calendar year and provides coverage for basic and major services. There is a small deductible and coinsurance associated with these services.
The reimbursement account plan includes an annual employer contribution that you can use for eligible dental and vision expenses.
Both options include an additional orthodontic benefit.
Pre-tax savings accounts
Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts provide you with convenient reimbursement for eligible expenses via a mobile app, online tool or paper form. Employees elect annually to contribute pre-tax dollars to this account.
In addition, you can take advantage of a Health Savings Account when you enroll in the high-deductible medical plan option. While similar to a Health Care Flexible Spending Account, this account is available through an investment firm and is portable.
Our wellness programs and services include:
- Online wellness portal. Covers six areas of wellness and helps you assess your health, set goals and track your progress related to healthy eating, stress and resiliency, and sleep.
- Telephonic programs. Easy access call-in programs, including Ask Mayo Clinic Nurse Line, Health Coaching for Pregnancy and Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline.
- Fitness facilities. Subsidized access to on-campus or community fitness centers.
Mayo Clinic's pension plan is one of the premier benefits available for benefit-eligible employees. The pension plan is entirely employer-paid; you do not contribute.
When you retire from Mayo Clinic, you can select one of many pension payment options, including a monthly annuity or a lump sum payment. The longer you work at Mayo Clinic, the greater the retirement benefit you receive. Your pension benefit is determined by a formula that is based on your pay and length of service.
Mayo provides a defined contribution plan that allows you to contribute pre-tax or post-tax dollars to a retirement savings plan.
Each pay period you contribute, Mayo provides a matching contribution on the first 4 percent of your contribution. Mayo contributes either 50, 75 or 100 percent of this amount, depending upon your accrued pension benefit service in the Mayo Pension Plan.
Asset management services
You can take advantage of asset management services to help manage your retirement savings and maximize your investment results. This service is provided for a minimal fee after you obtain a $5,000 balance in your retirement savings account.
Life and other insurance benefits
As a Mayo Clinic benefit-eligible employee, you receive employer-paid life insurance coverage equal to three times your annual salary.
You may purchase additional life insurance coverage for yourself, your spouse and dependent children. When you purchase additional life insurance for yourself, you have the option to contribute to a cash accumulation fund with a guaranteed competitive interest rate.
Accidental death and dismemberment
We offer employer-paid coverage equal to one times an employee's annual salary. This plan pays a portion of the benefit if you experience dismemberment due to an accident and pays the full benefit if you pass away in an accident. You may also purchase additional coverage.
Mayo Clinic employees are eligible to elect long-term care insurance for themselves, a spouse, parent, grandparent and in-laws. The plan offers a broad range of services for individuals of all ages who have physical or mental impairments and require assistance with daily living.
Coverage can include care received in the home, a community-based setting such as assisted living and adult care, or a nursing home.
Voluntary identity theft insurance
We offer voluntary identity theft insurance that covers expenses that you could incur in your efforts to restore financial health and credit history after identity theft. The plan covers everyone in your household and requires a low annual premium and small deductible for coverage.
Business travel accident insurance
Mayo Clinic provides an employer-paid insurance plan that provides a benefit if an employee is hurt or passes away while traveling for work purposes.
Educational support and benefits
We encourage our employees to seek educational opportunities to further their knowledge and skills. Mayo offers financial support for you to pursue higher education and certifications that will enhance your career and contributions after one year of benefit-eligible employment.

Time away from work benefits
Paid time off
Mayo Clinic offers employees paid time off for vacation, holidays and sick leave. You can start earning and using these benefits immediately and accrue paid time off as you continue to work. We also offer an option for you to cash in accumulated paid time off days for pay.
Mayo Clinic extends time off with pay to employees who need to attend funeral or memorial services for a relative.
Short-term and long-term disability
Employer-sponsored short-term and long-term disability benefits provide income protection when employees are unable to work due to a serious health condition. Short-term disability pays either 50 or 100 percent of your salary for up to 13 weeks. The amount paid depends on your employment status and length of service.
Long-term disability pays 65 percent of your salary if the disability period goes beyond 13 weeks.
Child and elder care resources
A range of services are available to help with elder, adult and child care needs, including temporary care arrangements, referrals, child adoption information and resources.
Employee Assistance Program
We value your health and well-being and offer free and confidential services and counseling for professional and personal concerns, such as family relationships, financial issues, legal issues, and alcohol or drug dependency. We also provide referrals to community resources for additional support.
Mayo Clinic provides financial assistance to employees who are adopting a child. We help meet the cost of adoption by reimbursing an employee up to $10,000 per adoption. This reimbursement can help cover legal fees and charges from a licensed adoption or placement agency.
We offer a $3,000 annual educational scholarship for up to four years of post-high school education for our employees' dependent children. Scholarships are awarded based on a student's national college entrance examination scores. This benefit is only available at certain Mayo locations.
Leave of absence
We offer a variety of types of leave, such as family and medical, educational, personal, and military. Depending on the type and duration of leave, employees maintain benefits while away.

Mayo Employee Resource Groups are employee-organized groups that form around a common dimension of diversity. Groups may focus on traditional diversity dimensions such as ethnicity, age and gender. They may also include such groups as veterans, single or working parents, or the disabled.
Parking and commuting
Mayo Clinic supports your commute by providing free bus passes, van pools and campus shuttles.
Employees have access to a free service for buying and selling personal items and services.
Mayo supports and encourages a mother's decision to breast-feed her infant child by providing convenient, private lactation rooms.
