Aziza Nassar, M.D., M.P.H.

Aziza Nassar, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., FACHE, is a distinguished expert in breast pathology, cytopathology, and gynecologic pathology. Her diverse interests include breast pathology, digital/computational pathology, and cytopathology, encompassing molecular cytology, fine-needle aspiration, head and neck cytology, and cervicovaginal Pap tests. Dr. Nassar is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and has been serving as the Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine since September 2018. Prior to this role, she was the Director of Cytology from 2013 to 2019, during which she pioneered numerous practice and technological advancements that significantly improved patient care.

Dr. Nassar has an extensive publication record, with over 150 articles and book chapters in leading oncology and pathology journals. She actively participates in national and international committees and editorial boards dedicated to advancing the fields of pathology and medical oncology. Currently, she collaborates with multiple research groups on projects involving biomarker discovery and vaccine therapies for breast cancer. She has also contributed to groundbreaking discoveries in breast pathology, particularly in the development of biomarkers.

A passionate educator, Dr. Nassar established the cytopathology fellowship program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 2009 and recently initiated a residency program at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, in 2024. As a renowned mentor, she has guided numerous trainees, including pathology and medical residents, surgical pathology fellows, cytopathology fellows, medical students, and individuals from underrepresented minorities. Her commitment to fostering diversity in medicine aims to inspire and recruit more underrepresented individuals into the medical field.

Dr. Nassar is currently the President of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology, where she works to advance the global education of cytology and small biopsies in collaboration with global organizations such as the International Academy of Cytology, the European Congress of Cytology, and the European Federation of Cytology Societies.

In addition to her clinical contributions, Dr. Nassar has been recognized as a certified executive healthcare leader by the American Association of Physician Leaders and holds fellowship status with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). She has served on numerous national and institutional committees, earning a reputation as a thought leader while supporting organizations dedicated to advancing healthcare delivery.
