Heidi Nelson, M.D., is a colorectal surgeon with a special interest in the management and investigation pertaining to colorectal cancer. Her clinical focus includes:

  • Practicing minimally invasive surgery to reduce time spent recovering.
  • Understanding and optimizing quality of life for patients with hereditary colorectal cancer.
  • Performing sphincter-preserving surgery in patients with primary rectal cancer.
  • Managing the surgical needs of patients with recurrence and locally advanced rectal cancer.
  • Conducting microbiome research to identify dietary factors that might lead to preventive strategies for colorectal neoplasia.
  • Identifying key elements of colorectal cancer surgery that can be standardized to ensure best practices nationally.

In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Nelson chairs the Department of Surgery and leads the Center for Individualized Medicine Microbiome Program. She conducts, presents and publishes research in the field of microbiome. She mentors trainees and investigators and serves as an editor and publisher in high-impact journals.
