The clinical interests of Joseph R. Duffy, Ph.D., include the evaluation, diagnosis, counseling, and treatment planning for people with neurodegenerative and other acquired disorders of communication. Examples of specific conditions include:

  • Neurologic motor speech disorders (dysarthrias and apraxia of speech)
  • Aphasia
  • Functional (psychogenic) speech disturbances.

He is also actively involved in research that focuses on defining the distinguishing clinical characteristics of primary progressive aphasia and apraxia of speech, and their clinical and neurologic correlates. This research will have implications for early identification of the pathology underlying those conditions and their early medical treatment when effective treatments become available.

  • Neurodegenerative speech and language disorders
  • Acquired neurologic speech and language disorders
  • Psychogenic speech and voice disorders
  • Differential diagnosis among acquired neurologic speech and language disorders
