Research

Mayo Clinic is a leader in diabetes research. At the Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics, researchers work on ways to regenerate the cells that produce insulin (beta cells). They are working on ways to enhance the body's natural ability to regenerate these cells, as well as ways to regenerate beta cells in the lab.

In the Mayo Clinic Artificial Pancreas Laboratory, researchers are working on expanding current closed-loop systems to some people, such as pregnant women with type 1 diabetes and people older than age 65. They're studying how to improve current closed-loop systems in partnership with industry sponsors.

Researchers also investigate mechanisms responsible for abnormal glucose metabolism in people with diabetes and prediabetes. Research can help find out the cause of diabetes and related disorders and develop new treatments.
