Research

Mayo Clinic researchers have a long tradition of conducting research to advance the care of people with brain metastases. Successful projects have included:

  • Identifying an interaction among proteins that allows cancer cells to grow and metastasize
  • Studying how brain function is affected after stereotactic radiosurgery plus whole-brain radiotherapy, compared with stereotactic radiosurgery alone
  • Identifying predictors of survival for people with melanoma receiving whole-brain radiation therapy for brain metastases, which helps to individualize treatment plans
  • Developing guidelines for treating people with breast cancer and brain metastases
  • Advancing treatment options for people with a rare type of brain metastases called leptomeningeal metastases
  • Developing a method of predicting who might benefit from rehabilitation services after treatment for brain metastases
