Hospital Nutrition Consulting Services
The Hospital Nutrition Consulting Services are comprised of a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, residents or trainees, and highly specialized dietitians, nurses, and pharmacists. These teams offer a comprehensive approach to malnourished patients receiving parenteral nutrition or enteral nutrition. These forms of therapy are costly and have a potential for serious complications if not properly prescribed and managed. The team completes a nutrition assessment, designs a nutrition program, addresses electrolyte/metabolic management and drug-nutrient interaction, and focuses on care of nutrition-access devices.
Clinical dietitians are involved with outpatient nutrition counseling and care for the nutritional needs of hospitalized patients. Patients under the care of Mayo physicians can be referred to clinical dietitians for nutrition counseling. Clinical dietitians are preceptors for the dietetic internship program of the Mayo School of Health-Related Science. The program accepts eight students each year.
Education and counseling related to nutrition are available for patients with:
- Lipid disorders
- Cardiovascular disease
- Renal conditions
- GI conditions
- Hypertensive disorders
Services are also available for patients with pediatric or geriatric disease who are receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition and those who are scheduled for surgery.
Home Tube Feeding Program
The teams also work closely with the dietitian coordinators for the Mayo Clinic Home Tube Feeding Program. Approximately 250 patients are being followed at any one time in this home feeding program. An associated nutrition fellowship allows qualified candidates the opportunity to specialize in outpatient and inpatient nutrition in conjunction with their subspecialty training in endocrinology, gastroenterology, or nephrology.
