Dr. Sumera Ilyas, M.B.B.S., is a physician specializing in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, with subspecialty certification in Transplant Hepatology. She is a transplant hepatologist within the Transplant Center at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

  • Management of patients with cholestatic liver diseases including primary sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cholangitis.
  • Management of patients with cirrhosis and complications of cirrhosis including ascites, esophageal varices, and hepatic encephalopathy.

Providing care in Mayo Clinic's Liver Transplant program; evaluating patients in need of liver transplantation as well as potential living liver donors; helping patients manage their disease while on the transplant wait list; and providing care in the post-transplant setting.

In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Ilyas is active in research and education, providing mentorship to subspecialty fellows and postdoctoral research fellows. She is a physician-scientist with expertise in tumor biology and an academic focus in hepatobiliary cancers. She is the director of the Mayo Clinic Hepatobiliary Neoplasia Clinic. She has an NIH-funded laboratory program focused on cancer biology and immunology.
