Rana Chakraborty, M.D., D.Phil., is a pediatric infectious disease specialist, with sub-specialty interest in immunology and HIV. His clinical focus includes:

  • Expertise in management of HIV in children and adolescents, and perinatal infections.
  • Coordination of care and management of infectious diseases in patients with underlying complex conditions including bone and solid organ transplantation and newborn prematurity.
  • Promoting understanding of infectious disease conditions, empowering patients to become partners in managing their health, particularly adolescents and young adults.
  • Promoting the importance of immunization of vaccine-preventable conditions on a local, state-wide, and nationwide scale.

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Chakraborty is active in research and education. His NIH-funded lab investigates placental immunology in the context of HIV, Cytomegalovirus and Zika Virus. I am a Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, where I serve as a physician-scientist. I previously served as the Medical Director for the Ponce Family and Youth Clinic within the Grady Infectious Disease Program of Grady Health Systems in Atlanta, GA. I possess both an M.D. and Ph.D. (or D.Phil.), and am dual certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Pediatrics. Nationally, I have served as Chairperson for the Committee on Pediatric AIDS at the American Academy of Pediatrics, and am currently on three Department of Health and Human Services Committees on HIV management. I was previously on two committees at the CDC for Pediatric HIV Surveillance and Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV. My time is divided between lab-based research and in-patient clinical care in pediatric ID. My lab is currently funded through the NIH examining how macrophages regulate immunity to HIV, CMV, Zika virus and (more recently) SARS-CoV2 infection at the maternal-fetal interface.
