  • Dr. Blackshear joined the staff of Mayo Clinic Florida as an assistant professor of medicine at the time of its founding in 1986. He has served as the chair of the division of cardiovascular diseases and president of the medical staff among other roles.
  • In the 1990s he was involved in a number of pivotal trials of warfarin and comparators in atrial fibrillation, and founded the idea of atrial appendage exclusion or resection to reduce stroke risk.
  • In 1993 he was promoted to Associate Professor, and in 1999 to Professor of Medicine.
  • His current interests include valvular disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and the impact of high intravascular shear from cardiac disorders on von Willebrand factor and bleeding.
  • He is the author or coauthor of 116 peer reviewed papers and numerous book chapters and abstracts.
