When to seek medical advice

Get emergency medical care or see your doctor as soon as possible if:

• You have had an acute traumatic injury that caused bleeding, deformity, or exposed tissue or bone
• You are unable to put any weight on your foot
• You have severe pain or swelling
• You have signs or symptoms of infection, such as redness, fever, warmth and tenderness in the affected area

Schedule an office visit if:

• You have swelling that doesn't improve after a few days of home treatment
• You have minor pain that doesn't go away after several weeks
• You have burning pain, numbness or tingling, particularly involving most or all of the bottom of your foot
