Yader Sandoval, M.D., is an Interventional Cardiologist and Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. He holds the academic rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Sandoval is a physician-investigator whose both clinical and research interests relate to patients affected by acute and stable ischemic heart disease and aimed at improving the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of patients that present with acute coronary syndromes or are burdened with coronary artery disease. His research has been largely focused in the field of acute myocardial infarction and cardiac injury and the use of cardiac troponin assays. He is particularly interested in improving our understanding of acute myocardial infarction occurring in the absence of atherothrombosis, a condition called type 2 myocardial infarction, as well as the implications of both acute and chronic myocardial injury. Similarly, he is interested in improving the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, for which reason he has worked in the development and validation of distinct novel diagnostic strategies using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays to improve the rapid rule-in and rule-out of acute myocardial infarction.
His research has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at both national and international scientific meetings. His published work includes over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts including notable publications in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the American Journal of Medicine, BMJ, Clinical Chemistry, among several others; as well as book chapters, and abstracts. He serves on the JACC Cardiovascular Interventions Editorial Board as a Social Media Editor and is a reviewer for numerous high-impact journals.
In addition to both patient care and clinical research, Dr. Sandoval is also interested in medical education. During his medical residency, due to his commitment to teaching and clinical work, he was selected by his peers for the Morris Davidman Teaching Award for outstanding teaching and patient care. He continues to work with both general and interventional cardiology fellows at the St. Mary's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
As part of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine he offers both non-invasive and invasive cardiovascular services, including procedures such as cardiac catheterizations and percutaneous coronary interventions, at both Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Clinic Health System.
