S. Mohammed Karim, M.D., is an orthopedic oncologist and spine surgeon who specializes in the surgical treatment of patients with tumors/cancer. His clinical practice includes:

  • Surgery with curative intent for primary bone and soft tissue tumors (sarcomas) in the spine, sacrum, pelvis, and extremities
  • Surgery for spinal cord compression and spinal instability from primary and metastatic tumors
  • Palliative surgery for metastatic tumors in the spine, sacrum, pelvis, and extremities
  • Surgical treatment of pathologic fractures and impending fractures from metastatic bone disease
  • Working closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, plastic surgeons, and other surgical sub-specialists at Mayo Clinic to provide the best care possible to each patient
  • Surgical treatment of degenerative spine conditions (cervical myelopathy, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis), spinal trauma, spinal cord injuries, and spinal infections

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Karim has a keen interest in education and enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows both in and out of the operating room. Dr. Karim also conducts clinical research to improve the outcomes of patients with musculoskeletal and spinal tumors. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences.
