William D. Edwards, M.D., began his lifelong love affair with the heart after seeing Frank Capra's film "Hemo the Magnificent" in eighth-grade science class. During his professional education, he had the privilege of training in cardiovascular pathology with the renowned Jesse E. Edwards, M.D., in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Dr. Edwards is interested is in all areas of diagnostic cardiovascular pathology, both acquired and congenital. He has authored or co-authored more than 440 peer-reviewed publications and more than 95 book chapters. Moreover, he has an aptitude for superb medical photography and also has published on that topic.

He has an avid interest in teaching and has garnered numerous teaching honors. He has presented many subspecialty conferences and short courses on cardiovascular disorders at the annual meetings of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Dr. Edwards has served as program director for Mayo Clinic's Cardiovascular Pathology Fellowship and head of the Cardiovascular Working Group. Dr. Edwards has participated in the training of numerous fellows in cardiovascular pathology.

He has routinely interacted academically not only with other pathologists but also with adult and pediatric cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, cardiovascular radiologists, cardiovascular fellows, and students in Mayo's echocardiography training programs. His expertise is regarded by those specializing in congenital heart disease, cardiac imaging, cardiac interventions, cardiac electrophysiology, and cardiovascular research.

Currently, Dr. Edwards is one of four authors of a forthcoming book, Non-Nnoplastic Disorders of the Heart and Blood Vessels, to be published by the American Registry of Pathology.
