Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers

Young Volunteer Patch

Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers provides volunteer opportunities in both clinic and hospital settings. The program is open to students ages 14 to 18 and undergraduate college students ages 18 to 25.

As a volunteer in Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers, you'll provide patients, visitors and staff with hospitality, services and amenities that would not otherwise be available to them. In addition, you'll have opportunities to access health care career information firsthand by attending presentations and tours arranged by Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers.

Teenage students

For teenage students ages 14 to 18, the minimum volunteer time commitment is one year. You are required to complete one regularly scheduled shift a week for at least 32 weeks during your one-year commitment. Some leave of absence time may be arranged with the coordinator to allow for participation in sports, band, clubs or other activities. Shifts are from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on weekdays; there are limited weekend opportunities.

See teenage student application requirements and process.

College students

Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers is open to undergraduate students ages 18 to 25. The minimum time commitment is one term for volunteers participating in the summer program or fall semester program. Only volunteers who participate in the fall semester program and successfully complete program requirements will be considered for the spring semester program.

  • Fall semester program (September to December)
  • Spring semester program (January to May)
  • Summer program (June to August)

You are required to volunteer four hours a week at a regularly scheduled day and time. Shifts are two hours long and scheduled according to program needs and your availability.

Most shifts are Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. There are limited evening and weekend opportunities. You are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours per volunteer term. Returning volunteers who successfully completed program requirements are given first priority.

As you will be volunteering in a health care setting, you must be prepared to meet numerous requirements and complete extensive training. Approximately four to six weeks may be necessary to bring volunteers on board, and there are strict deadlines for completing requirements.

See college student application requirements and process.
