Under the direction of operating room nurses, volunteers deliver messages to families the day of surgery to provide updated information. Shifts are available mornings and afternoons, Monday through Friday. Also, there are volunteer opportunities in the Outpatient Surgical Waiting Room. These volunteers greet and record arrival of patients scheduled for outpatient procedures and their families. Shifts are from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers assist Nurse Communicators at SMH by guiding family members to and from the Control Desk area to visit with the surgeon following a patient's surgery. Shift times are 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., weekdays.
