College Student Application Process

2012 spring semester program (Jan. 23 to May 4)

Only college students who participated in Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers during the fall semester and successfully completed program requirements are eligible to participate during the spring semester volunteer term.

2012 summer program (June 4 to Aug. 17)

To be eligible for the 2012 summer program, you must be an undergraduate college student between the ages of 18 and 25. Due to a limited number of volunteer positions, and because first priority for scheduling goes to current or returning Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers, not all applicants are guaranteed a position.

  • Application process. To apply, complete the Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers application form. Most areas on the application form can be filled out electronically, but after filling out those areas you must print the form and sign where indicated on the second page. Submit your completed and signed application by mail to the address at the end of the form between March 15 and April 15.

You must also have two people complete and submit the Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers college reference form on your behalf. The people you ask to provide references — for suggestions, see the list at the top of the form — may complete the form online and submit it directly to the Mayo Clinic Young Volunteers office by clicking the "submit via email" button at the end. Alternatively, completed forms can be printed and mailed to the address on the form. It's your responsibility to ensure that two reference forms have been submitted by April 15.

  • Interviews. Once applications and references are reviewed, selected applicants will be invited for a half-hour interview. You will be notified by April 23 by email if you have been selected for an interview. Interviews will be conducted during the first three weeks of May on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. After the interview and before orientation, you must:
    • Provide your information for a criminal background check
    • Read and review the confidentiality training handbook and pass a quiz
    • Schedule an appointment to review your immunization record at Mayo Clinic Employee Occupational Health Services
    • Have your photo taken for your Mayo Clinic identification badge
  • Orientation. If you are accepted into the program, you're required to attend a two-and-a-half-hour orientation in the Siebens Building, 14th Floor. At your personal interview, you will be provided with orientation materials, dates and times. You are required to have all orientation requirements completed by the end of May.
  • Service training. You must be available during the first week of June for service-area training.
  • Volunteer service. You're required to volunteer for four hours each week from June through mid-August, for a minimum total of 40 hours.
