Mayo Clinic Volunteer Services

Volunteers

Volunteers Barbara Rife and Bruce Halstead carry on the traditions of Mayo Clinic founders, Drs. Charles and William Mayo.

Mayo Clinic Volunteer Services was established in 1993 to provide patients and visitors in the clinic setting with hospitality, services and amenities that would not otherwise be available. Its purpose is accomplished through the efforts of dedicated volunteers attracted to Mayo's healing mission, who are willing to give time and talent to assist in honoring Mayo's commitment that "the needs of the patient come first."

What type of activities does a Mayo Clinic volunteer do?

A visit to Mayo Clinic can be overwhelming for many patients and their families. Not only are they often suffering serious illness, they are seeking care sometimes in unfamiliar territory from caregivers they may not know.

Mayo volunteers reassure anxious visitors, provide assistance in very big surroundings, and offer comfort and amenities during waiting times. They seek to augment the efforts of a caring but busy professional staff to ensure individual attention to the personal needs that Mayo patients bring. Volunteer assignments may involve direct interaction with patient and family members, or may be behind-the-scenes efforts. See the list below or see Volunteer Opportunties to learn about services currently provided by Mayo Clinic Volunteer Services.
