Training and Requirements

Volunteer

Mayo Clinic Volunteering is open to anyone over the age of 18. We also have a special program for teenage and student volunteers. We provide one-on-one special skill training in your volunteer area, as well as the same mandatory orientation required of all our employees.

You may train "on the job" as often and as long as you like until you feel ready to begin your service. Because our orientation is multifaceted, it generally takes up to three months to complete.

We ask you to:

  • Buy a uniform
  • Give us a minimum of four hours of service a week
  • Be dependable
  • Exercise complete confidentiality in all you do
  • Be a team player

The cost of the uniform for adult volunteers is about $35. Shirts worn by teens and students are $15. Payment for uniforms or shirts is made after we complete your background check.

After-school shifts are available.

Volunteers with special interests or skills may be needed. When applying for membership, please let us know so that we can place you in an area suited to your talents.

Because of the nature of our Volunteer Services program, clinic and hospital staff depend on volunteers. It is vital that our volunteers fill the shifts they have been assigned. Volunteers are responsible for finding a substitute if they cannot fill an assigned shift. To make the task easier, a list of fellow service volunteers and substitutes will be provided.
