Every effort is made to place each volunteer in the area of his or her choice. However, this is not always possible. Please make your desire known so that when an opening occurs in the area you desire, you may be reassigned.
These are just a few examples of volunteer opportunities at Mayo Clinic Florida.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday,
8 a.m.-noon or noon-4 p.m.
Under the direction of the charge nurse, volunteers assume responsibility for assisting staff, patients and patients' families. Volunteers must be able to prepare rooms for patients and be willing to perform other duties as appropriate.
Shift available: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon.
Volunteers have direct contact with patients and staff. Phone skills and a general willingness to assist the staff in patient care, clerical duties and transporting patients is required.
Shifts available: 7 days a week, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; 2-6 p.m.;
6-10 p.m.
Volunteers assist staff by providing information to patients' families, stocking supplies, cleaning and preparing stretchers and performing other duties as requested by staff. Being able to transport patients is required.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday
8 a.m.-noon; noon-4 p.m.;
4-7:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Mayo Gift Shop is operated by volunteers, and all proceeds benefit patients. Working in the gift shop offers opportunities to interact with patients, families and visitors. Volunteers are expected to assist customers, keep the shop tidy, assist with displays and learn cashier duties, including payroll deductions and Visa/MasterCard transactions.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon or noon-4 p.m., rotating to 5 p.m.
First impressions set the tone for the entire visit. Meeting the public in a warm and professional manner is essential. Volunteers greet patients and visitors and provide accurate directions and information. Volunteers must be pleasant and sensitive. Ability to learn basic computer skills and purchasing a blazer are required. Patient escorts also transport patients via wheelchair to their clinic appointments as needed.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday, various hours.
This is a vital service for patient and family satisfaction. Volunteers are needed to distribute donated magazines throughout the hospital and clinic.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon or noon-4 p.m.
Volunteers assist cancer patients and Oncology Department staff. Compassion, warmth and understanding are especially important in this service. Ability to stand for long periods is necessary, as is the ability to handle distressing situations.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.
Volunteers assist Optical Shop customers and help staff with general office duties. Ability to work well with the public is important.

Waiting room volunteers provide patient information and comfort and calm those waiting for a patient in surgery. Clerical duties are also required. Volunteers in surgery holding help make patients comfortable and keep families and visitors informed. They also assist staff as instructed and appropriate.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or noon-4 p.m.
Duties include sending out patient appointment schedules, stocking patient exam rooms, refilling patient-information brochure racks, shredding documents and tidying up waiting rooms.
Shifts available: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. or noon-4 p.m.
Surgery Holding and Recovery are the areas where patients are cared for before and after surgery. Volunteers serve as coordinators, answering telephones, receiving and relaying messages between departments and helping the nursing staff with routine clerical duties. Good organizational skills are essential. This position requires volunteers who are self-starters and able to stand and walk for long periods of time.

Volunteers provide family and friends with information about a patient in surgery holding, the operating room or recovery. It is important that the volunteer be alert, sympathetic, discreet and sensitive to the needs of waiting families. Excellent telephone and interpersonal communications are required. A considerable amount of walking is required.

Volunteers in Transport Services accompany patients in wheelchairs when they are discharged and take patients to various departments for tests, surgery, etc. Non-patient transporting duties may include delivering lab specimens, medical charts, magazines, personal belongings or flowers. The volunteer must be able to safely assist patients in and out of a wheelchair. A great deal of walking and pushing is required.
