At Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, vertebroplasty is part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes management of the underlying cause of the fracture as well as rehabilitation following the procedure. Specialists work collaboratively to provide the right treatment for each patient, whether it is rest and medication, vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty or a combination. Patients considered for vertebroplasty also see a doctor in Mayo's Spine Center so that all aspects of the evaluation and treatment of their pain can be considered. The vast majority of patients are treated using local anesthesia, meaning a shorter recovery time.
A specialist from Radiology (neuroradiologist) consults with patients and performs the vertebroplasty procedure. In addition, spine specialists from Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Endocrinology are available to assist in treatment of the spine as well as the underlying osteoporosis.
