Vertebroplasty

Research

Clinical researchers at Mayo have made important contributions to the evaluation of this relatively new treatment for painful vertebral fractures. Mayo Clinic in Rochester was awarded the only National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded trial comparing vertebroplasty to medical management for treatment of osteoporosis.

Researchers at Mayo are studying three areas related to vertebral compression fractures treated with vertebroplasty:

• Classifying the types of fractures that respond best to vertebroplasty
• Correlating the age of the fracture with treatment outcome
• Establishing the stability of the fracture over time following vertebroplasty
