Mayo physicians are continually investigating new diagnostic and treatment options for uterine fibroids. As one of three centers to conduct clinical studies on MR-guided, focused ultrasound, Mayo Clinic has shown that uterine fibroids can be removed from certain symptomatic women without the pain, complications and longer recovery time of surgery.
In addition, they've shown that vaginal hysterectomies offer many advantages to abdominal approaches in women with benign uterine problems such as fibroids. Mayo clinician-researchers published the largest clinical review of leiomyosarcomas and established a blueprint for selecting women at low risk for these malignant masses who will benefit from nonsurgical treatment from women at high risk who need surgery.
