Urinary Tract Infections

Diagnosis

A urinary tract infection is typically detected by analyzing a urine sample. Determining whether the cause of an infection is an abnormality in the urinary tract usually requires more specific testing, such as:

  • Voiding cystourethrogram. This X-ray test can help diagnose urinary tract infections associated with vesicoureteral reflux.
  • Ultrasound.
  • Excretory urogram or intravenous pyelogram. This X-ray test can identify abnormally large or small kidneys and blockages in the urinary tract.

For children, X-rays are done by pediatric radiologists in a child-friendly environment. Parents can stay with their children during the X-ray procedures.
