Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the lining of the large intestine. Ulcers form where the inflammation has killed the cells lining the colon; the ulcers bleed and produce pus. Ulcerative colitis can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are so similar to other intestinal disorders and to Crohn's disease.
