About Appointments
- Appointments should be scheduled for four to six weeks prior to travel or planned departure. Some longer-term overseas trips require appointments up to six months prior to departure.
- Bring your detailed itinerary and a list of medications you take to assure the most accurate recommendations.
- Consultations begin with a questionnaire that the traveler completes to ensure that all necessary information can be considered.
- Current immunization records should be brought to the appointment.
- Appointments take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the itinerary and activities planned.
- Education and advice will be provided during the appointment. Most vaccinations will also be completed during this visit.
- You may need to return for booster shots, depending on the travel destination.
- Your local doctor can perform the medical examination before the travel consultation, if an exam is needed.
- You should have your primary doctor refill all regular medication(s) prior to travel.
Prescriptions given for prophylactic or preventive medications/vaccinations can be filled at the Mayo Clinic pharmacies or a pharmacy of choice.
Payment
Some medical insurance policies do NOT cover travel preparation consultation or vaccinations. Contact your insurance provider prior to scheduling an appointment to determine coverage. Patients are responsible for payment of medical services, regardless of coverage.
