Not long after his ship arrived in New York harbor, William Worrall Mayo, 27, began moving westward.

Dr. William Worrall Mayo Marries
On Feb. 2, 1851, Dr. Mayo married Louise Abigail Wright.

Dr. Mayo was fascinated by the possibilities of the microscope and scientific research.

The River
The Mississippi River first brought the Mayos to Minnesota.

Why Rochester?
Appointed examining surgeon for the Union Army in southern Minnesota, Dr. Mayo liked the vitality of Rochester and soon made it home.
