Integration of Hospitals and Mayo Clinic
May 28, 1986, was a historic day for Mayo Clinic, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital. An integration agreement was signed on that day, uniting the three organizations under Mayo Foundation. For more than 90 years, an informal partnership among the three institutions functioned well for Mayo patients and the people who worked at Mayo and the hospitals.
The integration signaled another important step in continuing that close relationship and in preparing for future changes in health care delivery. At the time, the integration made Mayo Medical Center the world's largest, private medical center. It included more than 14,000 employees, 1,200 examining rooms, 1,800 hospital beds and 81 operating rooms.
