Tourette Syndrome

Treatment

Mayo Clinic doctors trained in nervous system conditions (neurologists) and mental health conditions (psychologists and psychiatrists) treat Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome can't be cured, but doctors will work with you to help you manage your symptoms and condition. Doctors also can treat any coexisting conditions you may have, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Treatment may include:

  • Medications. Medications may help control symptoms that interfere with your daily life. Your doctor may prescribe medications that block the neurotransmitter dopamine in your brain (dopamine antagonists), medications that may help behavioral symptoms (alpha-adrenergic agonists), antidepressants (selective serotonin uptake inhibitors) or other medications. Botulinum toxin injections into affected muscles may improve your symptoms. Medications may have side effects. Your doctor will work with you to determine which medications may help you.
  • Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy may help with psychological conditions that may accompany Tourette syndrome. It also may help you cope with your condition. You may have behavioral therapy to help manage your symptoms.
  • Patient education. Your treatment team will provide you and your family with education about Tourette syndrome and tics, and how to cope with the condition.
