Medications and non-medication approaches can be effective in controlling the symptoms of tic disorders and Tourette syndrome. Family education is provided at Mayo Clinic, including discussions about what tics are, how to deal with tics at home and at school, and how to treat related problems such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder or obsessive-compulsive behavior.
For those patients whose symptoms interfere with their day-to-day functioning, medications are available.
Psychotherapy may help patients with Tourette syndrome and their families cope with the symptoms.
Patients, families and physicians can discuss whether there are open clinical studies for which the patient may be eligible and willing to participate. Participation in open studies is voluntary.
