Mayo's Department of Otorhinolaryngology conducts research to address the needs of the head and neck cancer patient. Researchers from various disciplines conduct basic science, translational research and organ preservation studies. The program's goals include enhancing quality of life and improving the possibility for a cure for head and neck cancers. Read more about head and neck surgery research at Mayo Clinic.
A Mayo Clinic study found that using transoral robotic surgery for treatment of tonsil cancer is safe, effective and enables faster recovery times. Transoral robotic surgery is a new use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to remove hard-to-access tumors in the throat. Robotic surgery has previously been proven effective for prostate, gynecologic and cardiac surgery, and has now become the preferred technique at Mayo for tonsil cancer removal. Mayo Clinic researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of robotic transoral surgery on the voice box and other regions that are difficult to access through the mouth.
