TURP helps reduce urinary symptoms caused by BPH.

Urinary symptoms caused by BPH can include:

  • Frequent, urgent need to urinate
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Slow (prolonged) urination
  • Increased frequency of urination at night (nocturia)
  • Stopping and starting again while urinating
  • The feeling you can't completely empty your bladder
  • Urinary tract infections
  • The inability to urinate

TURP may also be done to treat or prevent complications due to blocked urine flow, such as:

  • Recurring urinary tract infections
  • Bladder or kidney damage
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Bladder stones
  • Recurring blood in your urine

Although a number of procedures are available to treat BPH, TURP is the most commonly performed procedure. TURP is associated with specific risks and complications that should be discussed with your physician.
