Kidney transplant surgery carries a risk of significant complications, including:

  1. Blood clots
  2. Bleeding
  3. Leaking from or blockage of the tube (ureter) that links the kidney to the bladder
  4. Infection
  5. Failure of the donated kidney
  6. Rejection of the donated kidney

Anti-rejection medication side effects

After a kidney transplant, you'll take medications to help prevent your body from rejecting the donor kidney. These medications can cause a variety of side effects, including:

  1. Acne
  2. Bone thinning
  3. Diabetes
  4. Excessive hair growth
  5. High blood pressure
  6. High cholesterol
  7. Increased risk of cancer, particularly skin cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  8. Infection
  9. Puffiness (edema)
  10. Weight gain
