Mayo Clinic's approach

Collaboration

At Mayo Clinic, radiologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, speech pathologists, surgeons, pharmacists, internal medicine specialists, dietitians, nurse specialists and wound care experts work as a multidisciplinary team to provide whole-person care for people who require home enteral nutrition (HEN).

Expertise

Mayo Clinic care professionals work with you to review all your treatment options. They'll help you choose the treatment that best meets your needs. Options for HEN include several types of feeding tubes. These include nasogastric, nasojejunal, gastrostomy, jejunostomy, transgastric jejunostomy and venting tubes. There also are several types of feeding methods and formulas.

Your care team tailors your training about home enteral nutrition to your needs. Topics include choosing and making your feeding formula, feeding tube care, finding good sources for supplies, and good ways to keep records.

Your training may take a few hours or a few days. Besides one-on-one training, you'll get instructions about your tube feeding program.

Ongoing care

Your care team continues to offer support and care after your training. Expect regular follow-up visits with your doctor, a registered nurse and a registered dietitian, who serves as your HEN coordinator. Your team stays in touch with you between appointments through the phone and online messaging. If any problems come up, your care team is there to help.

It's helpful to have a health care professional where you live to help with issues if you live far from Mayo. Your Mayo team will work with local professionals.
