The contraceptive sponge doesn't offer protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The contraceptive sponge and the spermicide it releases may cause:

  • Vaginal irritation or dryness
  • Urinary tract or vaginal infection
  • An increased risk of contracting STIs
