Specific efforts include studies of cochlear implants for hearing loss in one ear (unilateral) in adults and children, improved electrodes and implant technology, ways to preserve natural acoustic hearing after cochlear implant surgery, and the use of cochlear implants in people with vestibular schwannomas.

Other areas of research focus on children, including efforts to determine the effectiveness of cochlear implants for children with less severe hearing loss.
