Injury to any of the ankle bones, ligaments or tendons, and several types of arthritis can cause ankle pain. Common causes of ankle pain include:

  1. Achilles tendinitis
  2. Achilles tendon rupture
  3. Avulsion fracture
  4. Broken ankle
  5. Broken foot
  6. Gout
  7. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis
  8. Lupus
  9. Osteoarthritis (The most common type of arthritis.)
  10. Osteochondritis dissecans
  11. Osteomyelitis
  12. Plantar fasciitis
  13. Pseudogout
  14. Psoriatic arthritis
  15. Reactive arthritis
  16. Rheumatoid arthritis
  17. Sprained ankle
  18. Stress fractures (Tiny cracks in a bone.)
  19. Tarsal tunnel syndrome
