Types of Support Groups

Photo of man thinking about support group options.

Many different types of support groups exists. Some are very specific to disease, while others support patients who have similar symptoms but perhaps different diseases. Some support groups are led by lay people (people who have had an illness) while other groups are led by medical professionals such as physicians, nurses, social workers or health education professionals. Some support groups are small, while others may have many members.

Choosing a support group that feels right for you is important. Several Web sites listed below provide information on support groups or are links to disease-specific associations that have an index of support groups. However, this list is by no means exhaustive. You may also find support groups by talking to your physician, spiritual advisor or by searching the Web.
