Sports Performance Enhancement in Minnesota

Runners and Walkers Program

The Mayo Clinic performance enhancement program for runners and walkers helps people run and walk farther, faster and without pain.

From Casual Walker to Marathon Runner

Walkers and runners at all levels can benefit from our enhancement program. Some individuals would like to enjoy an evening stroll, but pain while walking keeps them indoors. A marathon runner may desire to perform at a higher level and improve her finishing time. Many people are able to reduce pain and improve their performance with a simple treatment such as shoe inserts. Our highly experienced staff will provide a thorough evaluation and recommendations based on your needs.

Program Features

After filling out a sport-specific questionnaire about your goals, possible problems and current exercise and training level, you will undergo a detailed assessment by an experienced physical therapist. The musculoskeletal evaluation includes strength, flexibility, range of motion and other physical conditioning areas. A biomechanical review of your stride is conducted, including digital video to identify any areas of concern. Following the consultation, you recieve a copy of the video and accompanying written assessment.

The physical therapist will provide instruction in pain and injury reduction strategies, as well as recommendations on how to make the most of your running and walking experience. Based on the physical assessment and identified goals, a personalized exercise prescription is formulated and provided, along with any equipment recommendations.

The runners and walkers program can benefit the casual walker by reducing pain or the experienced runner by improving mechanics and technique. Our goal is to help you walk and run faster, farther and without pain.
