Sports Medicine

Overview

Sports medicine specialists at Mayo Clinic provide a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of injuries of professional, amateur and recreational athletes. Preventive care is promoted through wellness, fitness and performance-enhancement consultations. At Mayo Clinic the sports medicine team can be made up of athletic trainers, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, orthopedic surgeons, sports physical therapists, sports psychologists and dietitians, depending upon the needs of the patient. Services offered at Mayo Clinic include:

  • Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sports- and activity-related injuries
  • Fitness assessment programs to improve sports performance and optimize fitness and health
  • Nutritional analysis and counseling
  • Assistance in dealing with the emotional aspects of injury and the psychological aspects of performance enhancement
  • Access to some of the finest rehabilitation and exercise equipment and personnel available today
  • Educational programs for health care providers, coaches, and athletes locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Contract services provided by registered athletic trainers for middle school, high school, and professional athletes and teams

At Mayo, sports medicine specialists are also involved with research and education to enhance care and performance of athletes. There are seven sports medicine physicians in Florida, eight in Minnesota, and two in Arizona.
