Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program in Minnesota

Research

Spinal cord injuries are the focus of specialized research teams at Mayo Clinic. One team is conducting basic science research in cell biology, including neurological recovery after a spinal cord injury. Investigators at Mayo and other spinal cord injury centers also are doing clinical studies to test a functional outcome assessment tool for patients and to assess secondary complications after injury. Another study is evaluating a new device to promote bone growth in the legs of individuals with paraplegia.

Physiology researchers at Mayo are currently working to understand how to restore breathing function to spinal cord injury patients who depend on mechanical ventilators. Learn more about their research.
