The Mayo Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ) was developed as a research tool to screen for several key sleep disorders. Researchers are welcome to use the MSQ provided that it is used for non-commercial purposes and no fee is charged. An abstract of Mayo Clinic validation on the MSQ was presented at the 2009 American Academy of Neurology meeting.
The utility of the MSQ for patient care continues to be studied, and a formal diagnosis of any sleep disorder cannot be made simply by completing a questionnaire such as the MSQ. However, sleep disorders are common and they can impact a person's overall health, safety and quality of life. An accurate diagnosis is essential, and fortunately most sleep disorders are treatable. For individuals who review or complete the MSQ, and one or more questions can be answered with a "Yes" response, it may be reasonable to discuss this further with their primary care provider.
