The Center for Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is one of the largest sleep medicine facilities in the U.S. About 5,000 new patients with sleep disorders are treated each year at Mayo's sleep center. The 20 physician specialists at the sleep center have broad experience in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders in adults and children. The sleep center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Specialists in pulmonology, neurology, psychiatry and pediatrics work closely together to treat patients' sleep disorders. When necessary, experts from otorhinolaryngology (ENT), oral and maxillofacial surgery and dental specialties join the team. This integrated approach enables Mayo doctors to quickly assemble a group of specialists to address all of a patient's sleep medicine needs. Sleep specialists are involved in every stage of the patient's sleep evaluation, from the initial examination, through comprehensive testing and therapy, to follow-up care.
The sleep center's state-of-the-art equipment includes 24 beds for polysomnography (sleep studies). Overnight sleep studies are offered Sunday through Friday for adults and children, including infants. A parent may stay overnight at the sleep center with a child under evaluation. Daytime studies, including multiple sleep latency tests, are also done in the sleep medicine lab.
Tests such as actigraphy (tracking sleep-wake cycles) and oximetry (measuring blood-oxygen levels) may be done in patients' homes. Mayo sleep specialists have experience with all breathing-support equipment available for in-home use.
