Salivary gland cancer

Research

Mayo Clinic specialists in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery conduct research on noncancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) salivary gland tumors through the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. Scientists from many specialties work together on research. Areas of research include:

  • Identifying proteins that play a role in the growth and spread of the tumor
  • Finding new therapeutic targets to attack the tumor
  • Treating tumors with chemotherapy and radiation therapy at the same time
  • Minimizing the impact of salivary gland surgery with cosmetically hidden incisions and meticulous reconstruction of the surgical defect when necessary
  • Rehabilitation of facial paralysis caused by salivary gland cancer and its treatment
