Saint Marys Hospital

About

Saint Marys Hospital north entrance

North Tower entrance of Saint Marys

Mayo Clinic, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital form an integrated medical center. Mayo Clinic patients who need hospitalization are cared for in one of the two Mayo Clinic hospitals in Rochester. The hospitals serve only Mayo Clinic patients and are staffed exclusively by Mayo Clinic doctors. A single administrative team manages both hospitals to most efficiently serve patients' needs.

Saint Marys is one of the nation's largest private hospitals and provides services in virtually every medical specialty. Saint Marys began in 1889, a joint project between the Sisters of Saint Francis and the Mayo brothers and their father. (See history.)

Five buildings at Saint Marys Hospital are named to honor Saint Marys' foundress and first administrator, Mother Alfred, and four Sisters who previously served as hospital administrators: Sisters Joseph, Domitilla, Mary Brigh and Generose. (See map.) The Francis Building honors the many Franciscan Sisters who have served at the hospital since its founding.
