Robotic Prostatectomy

Overview

Mayo Clinic is a national leader in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate conditions. Mayo specialists treat more patients with prostate conditions than any other medical center. Our prostate care team offers patients the highest degree of experience and expertise in advanced prostate treatments, including robotic prostatectomy surgery.

Mayo Clinic has been a pioneer in the use of the da Vinci® robotic prostatectomy procedure for prostate cancer treatment. Since 2001, Mayo surgeons have successfully performed more than 1,000 robotic prostatectomies, and have made significant advances to the technology and techniques used in this minimally invasive procedure.

Da Vinci® robotic prostatectomy uses a computer-enhanced robotic system to remove the prostate gland and surrounding lymph nodes through small abdominal incisions. The robotic system allows smaller and more precise incisions, which promotes faster recovery than traditional open or laparoscopic surgery. Most patients who are candidates for traditional open or laparoscopic prostatectomy are also candidates for robotic prostatectomy.
